still here

Lately not too much has happened. Im 20 now. Still in school, still playing soccer, and still in the closet. I have been thinking about tell my roommate though. Its on my mind from when I wake up to when I go to bed. I really don’t understand why I am so afraid to tell him. From all the coming out stories I have heard, there hasn’t been any negative reactions. Hearing these things is what causes me to think about it so much. If everyone’s friends accept them for who they are, shouldn’t mine??

Especially with the media attention on the gay community these past couple of weeks, from the “Don’t ask, Don’t Tell” policy, and then the suicides of gay kids, I just feel it would be awkward to come out now. It sucks hearing about kids committing suicide as such a young age due to being bullied. I still don’t get why others care if someone is gay or not. It has no effect on them. They had their whole life to live and now its cut short because of such ignorant people.

  1. Glad to see a post from u man! Just come out when your ready and when you don't have any doubts about it. Even though things went well with a lot of bloggers etc. lately doesn't mean it will go as smooth for u. People can be really strange it seems. Well my whole point to writing this is take your time and when your ready come out. lol. I'm 25 and still closeted but it hasn't been right time. Hope your time comes sooner man!

  2. I understand where you are coming from. I am an older gay and never came out. Way too stressful a life to endure. My advice to younger gays would be to come to a point and do it. You don't want the life I have, believe me. I think the net has been a great opportunity to discuss these things, especially with other gays. Wish I had this as a young man. Good luck to both you and Bi Dude NY. I keep up with your blogs to see how the younger guys are doing. I think you all are doing great!!

  3. I believe that National Coming Out Day is this Monday, October 11. But as BDNY says, do it when you're ready.

I could see how all the suicides might make it easier to come out now. People might be more willing to either hold their tongues, or, be extra supportive to prove that they would never bully a gay person.

  4. I just graduated from college. It will not get easier if you keep waiting to come out. College is THE time to do it (because doing it in the real world after you graduate is going to suck). I came out first semester of my freshman year. I was scared to death. But it was one of the best decisions I've ever made in my entire life.

It will not get easier if you keep waiting. I know you're freaked out and you keep making up reasons trying to justify to yourself that you should wait. How long?

Some people would suggest to wait until you're ready. If you keep waiting, you'll never fully be ready to come out until it's too late (kind of a catch 22). Do yourself a favor, get out of your comfort zone. Tell one person you trust, "I'm gay." You'll be glad you did. These two words won't change you in any way except that you'll feel the biggest sense of relief afterwards.

The first step is the hardest to take, but you don't get anywhere without it. Monday is National Coming Out Day. What better of a time to take that first step? Good luck.
